The end of the book finds David returning to Lucy’s farm. He works with one of Lucy’s friends who operates an animal shelter. When animals are euthanized, David’s job is to dispose of them. David protects one of the dogs, a tough stray, from being euthanized, but eventually relents and the dog is ultimately put down.
Lurie believes Petrus intentionally left the house unprotected so that it could be robbed. When Petrus invites Lucy and Lurie to a party to celebrate his new acquisition of land, Lucy comes face to face with the one of her attackers, a mentally disturbed young man named Pollux. Pollux is related to Petrus’ wife.

Book Summary. Written with the austere clarity that has made Coetzee the winner of two Booker Prizes and the Nobel Prize, Disgrace explores the downfall of one man and dramatizes the plight of a country caught in the chaotic aftermath of centuries of racial oppression.
While Coetzee aspired to become a permanent resident of the United States, his participation in anti-Vietnam-War protests ultimately prevented this. He returned to South Africa in the early 70s, where he taught English literature at the University of Cape Town, acquiring various promotions up until his retirement in 2002, when he relocated to Australia.

Disgrace Summary. Disgrace begins in Cape Town, South Africa with our narrator telling us that by this point in his life, 52-year-old Professor David Lurie has solved the problem of sex rather well (1.1). We learn that he gets his jollies out by visiting a prostitute named Soraya once a week, and that while he fulfills his desires with her, the sex is missing that wow factor.
